It all began with a big yellow mixing bowl…
It’s amazing how something as simple as a big yellow mixing bowl can make the difference in the life of a young girl, where years later she branched out and began her journey in life. A Sweet Design, as she calls it is a boutique style bakery known for their deliciously crafted cakes and cupcake desserts.
Growing up in Southern California where the beautiful weather is warm and sunny, most kids spend their days playing outside – not Joeleen. As early as she can remember she was in the kitchen. That’s where her life began, as she recalls. She would watch her mother make the most delicious chocolate chip cookies, with a big yellow bowl and a wooden spoon, stirring the batter until it was just right. This made a huge impact on her life. “It always seemed to make her happy to whip up a batch of cookies for us. It was my mother that inspired me to start my journey in baking,” Joeleen says.
With a passion for creating, as soon as Joeleen was old enough she enrolled in the prestigious Le Cordon Bleu in Pasadena, California. As a pastry chef with an artistic side, she created A Sweet Design in 2007, which is located in Granada Hills, California. Creating cakes are her specialty. She truly loves the entire process from beginning to end. Meeting with her clients and discussing their vision, to baking the cake, adding the delicious filling, and of course, decorating it so it looks fabulous for all to enjoy. However, she doesn’t want her cakes to just look good, she wants them to be scrumptious, too. She loves seeing everything come together and the positive reactions from her clients after their cake is delivered. Often times the couple will send Joeleen a photo of the cake and share with her how much their guests enjoyed it. “It’s such a joy to hear those kinds of praises,” Joeleen says. As a gift to the lucky couple, she will bake a complimentary cake for their first wedding anniversary!
A Sweet Design makes amazing theme cakes as well. Two of their more interesting designs have been a cake with a chocolate fountain built into it and, just recently, one with a ballerina rotating on top. Joeleen is always using her artistic flair, whether it’s making cakes, cupcakes, cookies, cake pops, or French macaroons to help sweeten the world.
Throughout her journey Joeleen always wanted to challenge herself, so she went on the television show Cupcake Wars to compete. She had a blast and loved the experience. She enjoyed working with the amazing production staff and meeting her fellow contestants (and competing against them too). Although she didn’t win the competition, she did come in as runner up. That is a memory she’ll cherish forever!
However, A Sweet Design is a winner! They have received high recognition for their cakes in the wedding industry. Seven thousand businesses voted and selected A Sweet Design in LA’s Hot List as “Best Wedding Cake” for three years in a row and in 2016, Wedding Wire’s Couples Choice Award for eight years in a row. The Knot Magazine honored them in their “Best of Weddings Hall of Fame” based on votes they received from local brides.
All of this would not be possible if Joeleen didn’t have a strong family that supports her in her endeavors. Her husband, and partner in the business, both enjoy working together every day. They have two young kids, ages 6 and 3…and I’m sure they’ve already been recruited as “taste testers” for all their creations. I guess you could say these kids have a different (and delicious) idea of “leftovers!” Together they make every last detail A Sweet Design.
