This Valentine’s Day celebrate the loved ones in your life.
After my mom passed away in 1997, my sisters and I were going through the house and we came across some letters that my mom held onto. They were tied with a nice pink satin bow. They were letters my mom and dad had written to one another. I’ve had those letters for years and one day, I opened a few and began reading them. The letters were personal and even though my parents had passed away, a strange feeling came over me. I felt odd reading them. Perhaps my feelings were normal, but I’m not a meddler. The fact that I was reading their personal letters made me feel like I was snooping. Would you like to snoop with me?
Here’s one letter my dad wrote to my mom on December 2, 1955.
I’ve got a long break between classes, and all I’ve got to do is homework, but I decided I’d much rather write to you. After all, you’re the girl I’m in love with, the girl I’m going to marry. Got your letter with the pictures in it, and I don’t remember them being taken. Gee you sure look good to me doll, I can’t wait to see you again. Those pics sure do bring back some very happy memories. That was when we started going together, the night you asked me to the beach party. Do you remember that night, up in Stough Park? I guess it wasn’t that too long ago, but it seems as though I’ve known you for much longer time.
…I can’t wait to see you again sweetheart. I miss you very much, you mean everything to me Barb. Saturday the 17th is going to be a very special day for me, you’d better catch up on your sleep before then; you may be out a little late that night. We’ve got a lot to talk about, but I don’t think either one of us will do much of it that night. I just want to hold you tight, to know I’m really home, and tell you how much I love you.
So you’ve already finished your Christmas shopping huh? I’m the kind who is still buying gifts on Christmas Eve. [Now there’s a story for another blog post. Stay tuned.]
Had another test today and I did pretty good I think. This one was in drafting… Now if only I could write an English theme like I can write a love letter to you, I’d be getting all A’s in there.
…I love you sweetheart and I really miss you. I can’t wait to see you. Hope you’re in a real good mood when I get home. And if not, I don’t think it will take me long to get you in a good one. Hope you can also take a lot of loving cause you’re sure going to get enough to last a long time. Be good sweetheart, and be a good girl, I’ll be seeing you soon. I love you with all my heart.
All my love always,
My dad was a true gentleman and he loved my mom dearly. He had met the love of his life and he’s wasn’t about to let her slip away. They married February 2, 1957.
Faith, hope, and love, but the greatest of these is LOVE. 1 Cor. 13:13
