What began as a college art project, turned into a business and a love of tea for Donna McCafferty. During the 1980’s, while attending Kutztown University (PA) as an art student, Donna came up with the concept of The Tea Can Company from a branding class project. However, she didn’t act on it right away.
After college, Donna worked in graphic design and had a small Ad and Design studio for many years. Donna wanted to create a unique promotional product as a holiday gift for her clients, so she presented them with her first tea package and the response was overwhelming. They loved the idea, the quality of the tea, and, most importantly, the lasting effect of the purposeful message. Donna said, “I felt strong admiration that I was able to share my passion of tea, as I brought two of my loves together – ART and TEA.”
In 2011, after much consideration, Donna started The Tea Can Company. Over time, companies started ordering custom cans for their businesses, weddings, or special events. That led her to pursue learning more about different types of tea. She wanted to become a tea expert and packaging guru.
It was also in 2011 that she gave up drinking alcohol and focused on learning more about the health benefits of drinking tea. For that reason, she rediscovered the wonderful advantages that tea has to offer.
It’s important to note that the teas from The Tea Can Company are the best and finest quality of teas and herbal blends from around the world. They package them in large and mini tins, craft and organza bags, all at various price points to fit anyone’s budget. They also design and package their teas for special occasions, corporate gifts, souvenirs, and bridal favors. Their teas and blends are carefully selected to ensure that the tea is always fresh and offers the customer the best value for their money. With their biodegradable signature tea sachets, it affords more room for the tea leaves to expand to ensure a better brew and allow more flavor to be released. And their pyramid sachets are made of biodegradable starch material. Even the tags and strings are attached by being ultrasonic sealing rather than glued.
“We work with the best tea imports, blenders, merchants and consultants in the country,” says Donna. Their fine teas have the best blends from Sri Lanka, India, and China, while their herbal blends are mixed from natural ingredients using the finest flavors and aromas.
Inspiration comes from many places, so it’s no coincidence that their most unique flavors were inspired by the Philadelphia Flower show. They created twelve teas that became very well-liked among buyers, from Rose Petals, Lemon Lavender, and Rooibos Chai. Rose Petal is their most popular and they have a hard time keeping it on the shelf. Their Lemon Myrtle comes from an Australian flower and is absolutely delicious! Hibiscus is one of their new dieter’s tea. It tastes lovely and helps with weight loss! Who doesn’t want that?
Designing her tea can labels is second nature to Donna. When a client shares their ideas for their special event or business it’s like music to her ears, as she envisions the concept, designs the customized label that will adorn the tea can. She loves seeing the final product come to life! “It’s like dressing a model for the runway. Although I’m dressing the tin can for the event,” Donna exclaims!
The Tea Can Company makes custom labels for private label branding, business promos, and special events, such as showers, weddings, birthdays and anniversaries. They sell to a few retail stores, but most are available for purchase online at www.theteacancompany.com.
You can also find their teas in universities and college bookstores across the nation under the Universitea® label. Their fundraising program allows non-profits to sell The Tea Can Company products to raise funds for their school, church, breast cancer organization, The Lupus Foundation and others.
None of this would be possible if it wasn’t for Donna’s mother and grandmother who inspired her and her love for art; her art teachers, Mrs. Pope and Mr. Burnaby, who encouraged her to believe in herself and nurtured her confidence; and her sister whom she looks up to and is her greatest inspiration!
Donna enjoys her life, family and work. Her husband, the love of her life, and her daughter support her passion and love her dearly. And her dogs love her, too! Maybe it’s because she takes them on long walks every day. Shhh, don’t tell them she does it for the exercise!
